Capybara

Capybaras are the world's largest rodent and spend almost all of their time in and around water. They are great swimmers and have webbed feet!

Diet

Capybaras are herbivores and feed mainly on grasses and aquatic plants. They may also eat some fruits and bark when available.

Social Structure

Capybaras are gregarious and live in larger social groups of between 10 and 20 individuals. There will be 2-4 dominant adult males, with the rest being females, non-dominant males, and young.

Threats in the Wild

Capybaras are preyed on by jaguars, ocelots, anacondas, eagles, and caimans among others. Capybaras are also hunted by humans for their meat and fur in certain places. They are at risk for habitat loss and degredation.

Our capybaras were born at a facility on Long Island and arrived at our zoo in early 2026
